Now let’s get into it…
My usual moisturizer is Cicaplast Baume B5 by La Roche Posay and right away I noticed that Merit Beauty’s Great Skin Priming Moisturizer also is a very thick, very concentrated formulation, not unlike my regular moisturizer.
I found that you only need one pump, I tried two and that was far too much. I have quite dry skin that’s even flaky right now from using Differin, and that still was plenty of moisturizer.
Pros
Very thick, not watered down, glycerin based formula that’s unscented. I love glycerin based moisturizers, so the creamy, extra thick texture really appeals to me, and it spreads out very easily and is easy to work in a thin layer. Please just try using one small pump of it first and spread it around. You can layer more on but I think this might be plenty, as it was for me.
Lasts all day, looks very dewy over Merit Beauty’s serum, which launched before this product and I have also tried (and enjoyed).
The dew is real. If you see videos about it (I’ve made some as well), it really does give off a huge amount of glow, almost on the side of too much shine. So be warned, you will look very glowy unless you’re using a mattifying longwear foundation or powder product over it.
I have some retinization going on right now (sensitive skin due to retinols) and it didn’t bother me at all, and neither did the serum.
Cons
Merit Beauty moisturizer is unscented but still has a light but noticeable plasticky scent that goes away after about one minute. You can’t smell anything at all by the time you’re finished your makeup routine.
My personal, brutally honest opinion about Merit Beauty Great Skin Priming Product is that it’s very good for very dry and dry skin. Whether it’s good for oily skin, I don’t know, perhaps not.
I think Merit will probably bring out a lighter formula if this one is a success. It makes a lovely very dewy primer under foundation, but it’s so thick that texturally it’s not going to be for everyone. I’m slightly surprised they didn’t launch it for the whole Christmas season in a way, because that’s when so many of us need to invest in a heavy moisturizer. This has felt heavy for late summer, but I know it will be perfect for the cold weather.
So on that note, of course not everyone lives in my climate. If you live in a climate where you’re already quite dewy and the moisture levels are high (I’m thinking Florida, Singapore, the Caribbean…you get the idea) then I suspect this moisturizer is overkill and it would be worth waiting for a lighter formula to come out, or just get the serum. If like me you live in a temperate climate and you suffer from dry skin, I think I can safely recommend it.
Good luck! Here’s a full video review I made on it (going live on August 30, 2024.) If you’re really on the fence or you want to see this moisturizer in action before you buy, I go into more detail in this in-depth review.
